As we moved our classroom online, I began recording myself hosting story time. Story time was my class's favorite part of the day and I wanted to continue this tradition, even while we were apart. It was a moment of normalcy for my 5 and 6 year old students. My students have enjoyed watching my YouTube videos that share our classroom's favorite stories, as well as new stories! Today, our country is asking that we recognize and voice the importance of all lives and backgrounds, but specifically voice the discrimination that people of color have had to endure. As an educator, I want all of my students to feel safe, heard, represented, and important. I want to foster a sense of belonging, no matter color of skin, gender, or physical ability. While discrimination can be a difficult topic for children, most children come into school with an open heart and an open mind. I would like to keep that inclusive focus with a diverse library that features each kind of student in the books we read. Our school does not have a central library on campus, so I would like my own classroom book collection to reflect how diverse our school campus community is. Thank you for supporting the Social-Emotional growth of our country's future leaders!
