When visualizing the traditional classroom, rows of desks and chairs facing the front of the room comes to mind. However, research and developmentally appropriate practice indicates increased socialization, improved work habits, attention to task and joy happen with opportunities to access a variety of materials as well as a variety of furniture. In a 21st century learning environment, our second-grade students should have opportunities and choices over how and where they learn best within the classroom setting. Choices are necessary for self-directed learning. The classroom furnishing must reflect this idea, and the items on our list will assist with this endeavor.

About my class
