I am a first-year special education teacher working at a small K-12 school with very little resources. I teach special education to a wonderful group of middle school children. I teach students with disabilities ranging from ADHD to seizure disorder. I currently have 24 students on my caseload and I am trying to collect materials I can use in the classroom to help them better understand what they are learning in the general/regular education classroom. I am trying to turn disability into ability for my students. I need classroom resources that will gain my students' attention and support them in the general education class when I am not there to support them. My ADHD students benefit from fidget band and sensory toys to keep them seated in their desks the entire lesson. My students with autism are currently struggling when taking tests due to extremely bright lights and loud classes next door. My kids will benefit from the light covers and the soundproof headphones when taking tests. Many of my students are visual or hands-on learners and do not have the materials needed to help them grasp the lesson. My school does not have the funds to give each classroom a Promethean board/projector to aid teachers in giving abstract lessons. My students with Autism will benefit from the light covers and soundproof headphones when taking tests. My students with ADHD will benefit from the class planner to keep up with upcoming assignments My students do not have planners to keep track of their assignments. My goal for my students is to accommodate them to their needs to aid them in class. I am willing to try any strategy/manipulative I can with my students if it means they grasp what I am teaching.
