Due to large class sizes and not enough space, often times students have to sit out to ensure we are playing by the rules and staying safe. To keep the students sitting out active, I have them work as a referee. Additionally, we have peer voted all-star games in which students who don't receive enough votes earn participation by officiating the games. We also have a referee shortage in our state and this could help spark interest in a profession that needs more qualified individuals. We already have been donated jerseys, but having electronic whistles will give our students a sanitary way to take our games to the next level! When students referee, it is a great learning opportunity that forces them to apply their knowledge of the game in real time (It is very eye opening for students to see how challenging this can be)!
