My students need a camera. Capturing the stories of our dynamic school community is a challenging and a rewarding task for the students on our student run, award wining school newspaper and online new site. In our ever-changing media landscape, reporters and media content creators have to be well versed in all of the various forms of investigating, recording, and telling the stories that are most important to their community. Photography, while always an essential element of journalism, has become an even more important medium for storytelling and bringing to light the events that affect our school and city. By equipping our photojournalists with the tools that they need to effectively capture the most important moments in the lives of our student community, we are empowering them to be truth seekers and storytellers. These are skills that will benefit them, and us, for a lifetime. While they could take passable photos with their cellphones (a method that we have relied upon at our publication), by having access to a professional grade camera, my students will have the opportunity to practice a set of skills that they would not have access to otherwise; and they can more effectively serve their community while doing so.
