Our school was built in 1958, and the floors are hard, cold linoleum. My first graders have a hard time concentrating on the lesson for more than five minutes, due to the flooring. A pair of classroom carpets that would accommodate our whole class of 20 (or more) students would greatly improve their ability to focus when in group activities. Every time I read a book to the class, we have to come together on that cold, hard floor. When they are working in small group workstations, they are not comfortable. I truly believe they would be able to focus and concentrate better if they had a pair of carpets to sit on when the activity requires them to be on the floor. We are on the floor several times a day, whether it be reading a book in different subject areas, or workstation activities. What a blessing it would be for my kids to be comfortable on a nice carpet, instead of cold, hard linoleum. They would, I firmly believe, pay closer attention, and be able to get more high quality work done efficiently, if they were comfortable. Please help me make the environment more learner-friendly for my first graders.
