I have been playing guitar for more than 20 years. I was disappointed to find out that none of my students played guitar and only two had lessons at one time. So, I am starting a guitar club for 6th-grade students at my school. I will be teaching them how to tune a guitar, how to play chords, and how to read music and tablature. Many students do not have a guitar, cannot afford one, and cannot afford lessons. Even if they have a guitar at home, they could not bring it to school on the bus due to regulations. Having several guitars available for them to learn on in this after-school program will give them an opportunity they otherwise would never experience. Not only will this club encourage them to learn music, but it will allow me to build stronger relationships with my students. Relationships are the key to successful teaching and student learning.
