Ask almost anyone what contributions Albert Einstein or Stephen Hawking made to the scientific community, and most people would be able to give you an answer. On the other hand, when you ask about Marie Curie or Katherine Johnson, a vast majority have no idea who these women are. As we all know, one chapter, one paragraph, or even one tiny sentence from an inspirational book, can change the course of your life. For this reason, I am hoping to incorporate books about women in science into my classroom library. If girls are not told they can compete in STEM-related fields and are not given examples of women that have succeeded, they might not consider it as a viable option. By reading about women that have made contributions to the scientific community, girls will begin to see themselves as a future scientist and realize that the sky is the limit. We read about Malala, now all the girls want to be brave. That was just one book. Imagine what your contribution would do for them.
