My second graders have been excited to start reading chapter books on their own this year, asking to read throughout the day and sharing a well-loved book with a classmate when they are finished. This semester, we began chapter book studies as a class, reading individual copies of the same book all together and using it to practice reading and writing skills. Enhancing comprehension through summarizing, analyzing characters, and making inferences using context clues is so much more engaging for my students with their own copy of the book and the ability to talk to classmates about it! As we start our next book, Charlotte's Web, after spring break, this same experience of holding their own copy of the book will encourage my students' ongoing love of learning. The current alternative is copied packets of the book, but these hard copies I'm requesting of a story so many people (including myself) have enjoyed for decades will provide more meaningful learning opportunities for both current and future second graders, as well as communicate dignity as my students hold their own copy of a brand new book to read, write about, and enjoy. Thank you so much for your support!
