In order to provide a diverse learning experience, I want to gather a collection of engaging chapter books on social issues. My students will have the opportunity to choose which social issue topic most interests them. They may choose to learn about poverty, immigration, segregation, family dynamics, death, or fitting in. In book clubs, they will explore and reflect on issues that are within our world today. By doing so, students will be able to create empathy for the world they live in and become an advocate for change. After being immersed in their social issues book clubs, students will have the opportunity to create a podcast sharing their thoughts and ideas about the topic they studied. They will be able to share their voice with the community and help to bring awareness to the issues present in our world today. Through this unit, students will engage in meaningful conversations with their peers, and make connections to the outside world. They will be able to choose from three to four books within each social issue to read independently, allowing them to notice issues present within our society.
