To optimize student engagement and to offer a chance for students to show their creativity through exploration, a variety of common classroom manipulatives (snap cubes, pattern blocks, tangrams, Popsicle sticks, wooden blocks, etc.) will be needed to support student growth and learning. Manipulatives provide a concrete foundation for learning abstract ideas and allow for differentiation to take place in the classroom. We can use these manipulatives in our Morning Work Tubs (a play-based opportunity for students to explore, create, communicate, and get excited about their day) and during our math lessons to help students with concepts like 1:1 correspondence, addition/subtraction, sorting and classifying according to shape, color, size, or other attributes and so much more! Using these classroom manipulatives will strengthening the students’ fine motor skills, attention to detail, spatial awareness, and critical thinking.
