In my classroom, we do a lot of center time and rotations for literacy, reading, and math. I usually have four centers. Two teacher-led centers and two independent centers. The hands-on manipulatives will give students the opportunity to connect, for instance, decomposing numbers or learning addition and subtraction during our lessons and after. Using any kind of building toys connects these standards by showing what’s happens when we add a part or take away apart. This play or learning makes the concepts more relevant. The books will connect the concepts of connecting their sight words, phonemic awareness, and making meaning out of their reading more meaningful. The books also add to our curriculum studies. Kindergarten lessons consist of more hands-on and visual learning than a lot of lectures. When learning is fun and connects to their lives or the world around them, they not only learn better, but they are more engaged in their learning. I want my students to have fun learning their literacy, reading, and math standards without it being a rigid experience. I want them to learn their fine motor skills, counting, and letter learning experience to be one that excites them and one that they look forward to doing/playing. I want them to ask to do that center again and again. Learning should be about fun and being able to manipulate objects or use letters and numbers to learn to read, write, and figure out the math.
