I am requesting this book by a Native author because it is set in our state. The events within it reflect the history of our state during the termination era. For some of my students, their families have experienced what the main characters have. Due to COVID restrictions, I am asking for enough books to send home with every 6th grader enrolled at our school. In a typical year, I would ask for a classroom set. Additionally, many students need reading practice. It is impossible to develop a skill unless it is practiced. It is imperative they have captivating novels to read in order to engage them in the habit of daily reading. Further, all students need to see minority characters reflected in the books they read. Thus, whether the novel reflects their own experience or not, reading a book set in our state by a minority author will enrich students' understanding of their world. It is important for students of color to see themselves in novels in the classroom, and it is important for other students to understand the stories of minority characters as well.
