Having an iPad opens the door for various apps to help improve my students’ communication skills. Some of my nonverbal students will have access to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps so I can teach them the power of making a connection with another person using language by having them use a device that transforms button pushes to spoken words. Other students will have access to a variety of speech therapy materials that are available through apps as well. iPad apps give students access to materials that I can use to reinforce and teach many aspects of communication, including receptive and expressive language, such as vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension of spoken language; articulation; voice; and fluency.
