I am a school counselor at a small, rural K-12 school in the Appalachian Mountains of Western North Carolina. Our community contains one, small general store that sells snacks and fuel. We are located in an extremely poor economic region with almost no sources of employment within a 50-mile radius. As with many poor economic regions, our students face a variety of hardships. Our school is the center of the community and the main source of interaction for our students. I want to create a calm, relaxing spot for students to come to and feel safe in which I will provide resources and implement strategies to help students learn to regulate their emotions. The materials that I am requesting will help my students both socially and emotionally. The furnishings for the room will provide nice, comfortable seating for sessions. The light diffusers will dim the bright fluorescent lights and the sound machine will set the tone to create a soothing atmosphere. The social emotional multi-sensory counseling resources and materials will be utilized to deliver counseling services, interventions and supports.
