Reading different genres while engaging conversations with students about social aspects of stories allow our students to see different perspectives from different characters and environments. Our students come from socio-economic backgrounds that limit their ability to perceive the world they live in from more than their own perspective. Their ability to engage socially and emotionally with others appropriately also limits these abilities. Allowing students the chance to visit other time periods and people through non-fiction and historical fiction gives them more opportunities to experience new places and people. We use SAM's model in our school to teach social skills. Each student is working on accomplishing different skills such as self-control, maintaining physical boundaries, accepting no, accepting feedback, and following directions. Reading about character's struggles or accomplishments in literature allows them the opportunity to experience feelings and discuss situations and responses to those situations in a way that is safe for them emotionally. These literature discussions often lead to their understanding of why and how their social skills affect themselves and others.
