Elementary students need to have manipulatives for hands on instruction. By using magnetic letters, students can blend and segment words easily. They can also create new words and sentences easily. The ultimate goal is to make reading instruction fun and engaging so that students can develop a life long love of reading. I want to students to be able to move letters around, make words, learn new reading concepts, and enjoy learning. Each of these things can happen when students have the right tools. Research shows that hands-on activities help students learn reading concepts faster. Small group instruction with these tools will help students fill in the gaps in their knowledge.
