My focus in the classroom is always to foster more than just academic growth. Schools should also be preparing students for life by helping them develop social-emotional skills and a sense of self-awareness. When students make connections to a good book, they learn alongside their characters. Poppy by Avi teaches students to take ownership of their choices and to stand strong in the face of adversity. It is also an allegory for the American Revolution, which is one of the most important times in our country's history. The main character of this book is a mouse and it features a full cast of animal characters. This will also allow for science integration. I am already preparing for an amazing lesson that involves dissecting owl pellets to discover the real-world connection between Poppy, the mouse, and Mr. Ocax, the owl.
