The Track series, by Jason Reynolds, will enhance the current reading curriculum for two Intensive Reading classes of struggling, reluctant readers. I purchased a class set of Ghost, a grade level text by Jason Reynolds, and my students devoured the book. When they found out the book was a part of a series, they begged me to allow them to read those, too. These students want more! This is unheard of, and I want to nurture this budding love for reading. With this class set series, my students can continue reading books that appeal to them, leading to a deepening love for reading. The benefits of reading this series are limitless. First, the series is high interest, so kids are actually reading; the best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will serve that purpose. Secondly, this series teaches life lessons. From what it takes to be a positive role model to the characteristics of effective leadership, students realize that the conflicts each character in the series deals with are similar to the issues they face daily. These books shed a positive light on some grim situations. Not only that, but because the students love to read these books, their reading proficiency will increase, getting their reading level one step closer to their academic grade level.
