This learning project strives to provide students with a learning environment that strives to increase student engagement, empowers their choices, improves participation, and allows them to be “at home” while learning. Research supports that students learn better in flexible seating classrooms. In Albemarle County Public Schools they have noticed that students’ grades have improved, students seem to be happier and more engaged, and their student are participating more and having more invigorating conversations according to an article from edutopia. Flexible learning classrooms are becoming the norm instead of being the new. I strive to provide my students with at least four different seating options. With this in mind, I would like to purchase tables and chairs that will allow students to have a high top seating option, low top seating option, and a regular table seating option. Each of these leveled options will also have different seats such as chairs, pillows, stools, no chair (standing or lying down), or ideally even a yoga ball or wiggle seat. According to Eric Jensen in his article “Moving with the Brain in Mind”, “Teachers need to engage students in a greater variety of postures, including walking, lying down, moving, leaning against a wall or desk, perching, or even squatting. The brain learns best and retains most when the students are actively involved in activity.” Having different seating options allows students to be most comfortable and actively move when they need to do so.
