After thirteen years of academic growth and countless personal experiences, my students will be graduating high school and moving on to tackle the demands of college, careers, and the responsibilities of adulthood. As a culminating senior project, they will reflect on their unique experiences to develop their own memoirs, which will be printed and presented with creative front covers, back cover blurbs, peer reviews, author bios, and acknowledgments. In order to be successful in this task, students will explore memoirs written by authors with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences; some that reflect students' stories, serving as a mirror to their individuality, and some that will open their eyes to new perspectives, serving as a window to learn about and appreciate differences. It's important that students are given a choice of memoirs, written by a range of authors: entrepreneurs, politicians, activists. They will collaborate with each other to discuss big ideas, learning experiences, connections, and professional growth. Once their memoirs are written, students will present them at a Senior Showcase. Exposure to each others' memoirs will help students gain insight and understanding about each other that will bring them closer together, ultimately creating a strong sense of community to be preserved beyond high school.
