Students learn about many facets of agriculture and natural resources through my elective class. At the high school's Land Lab facility, my students learn about cattle, pigs and sheep. Gloves are necessary when cleaning up after the animals. We utilized some wool fleeces that were sheared from the high school flock, and my students learned how to process the wool (cleaning, dying and felting it). The idea of making it into a product (dryer balls) to sell to fund raise for our program/class was their decision. We need some supplies (felting needles, merino roving, drying racks) to help with this wool processing. Some students found the process therapeutic and hadn't realized that they could use fiber to make items to sell. Purchasing supplies will help the class have an income and students will learn some business skills. My students have two goals: 1) build a production garden and apple orchard that will provide food for our cafeteria, and 2) improve the quality of native species habitat to provide food for wildlife. We have gotten approval for the space to put the garden and orchard, but need equipment and tools to do so. There are quite a few invasive species in our natural area and many of them have thorn, so gloves are a necessity. Shovels, saws, loppers and pruners that can handle the "tough stuff" are also necessary.
