Research suggests that the more time children spend reading, the better readers they become. For my special needs students, this is especially true. For many of the children in my classroom, reading is a source of stress because of lack of comprehension skills and fluency. I often read aloud to them so that they may experience the joy of getting lost in a good story, and while they enjoy this time with me, I want to empower them to give themselves that same experience. To this end, I am building a book nook in my classroom. I can assign as many books as I would like to my students, but assigned reading in a hard plastic chair while sitting at a desk will never be as alluring, enjoyable, and powerful as a comfortable space where students can relax and lose themselves in a story of their own choosing. I have added book collections at every grade level from Kindergarten thru 5th grade to my project so that every student who enters my room can find something they are able to enjoy independently, whether it is a book of pictures or a children's novel. I am certain that area of my classroom will quickly become a favorite place for students to practice their literacy skills and build their confidence as readers while also fostering a life-long love of reading.
