About three years ago, we started a food pantry at our high school. This is great for students taking food home on the weekends. In addition, some of our students require snacks during the school day to help keep them going. This often comes from the food pantry as well. In order to keep the food pantry sustainable, we are constantly searching for grant monies to ensure our kids that come early or stay late have snacks available to them if necessary. The students at our high school will benefit from this because they come in to the food pantry to take care of their hunger need but what they find when they come to the food pantry classroom is an opportunity to also take care of their emotional needs. They are met by a caring adult who asks them about their day and checks up on them to see how they are doing. This helps us keep our high school a safer environment as we can often head off later issues with these proactive conversations. This is an important service when we try to provide wrap-around services to our students in before school or after school options. Currently a lot of people personally donate to make sure our students have what they need. This funding would help ease the burden of our staff having to always fulfill this need.
