My students have immense creative talent, and a passion for visual arts as demonstrated by the wonderful art displayed throughout the halls of our school (and doodles I find in their notebooks.) I'd like to increase their engagement with science content, by incorporating the arts into my classroom. One of the major upcoming topics in my chemistry class involves the properties of water and solutions. When it comes to science, seeing is believing and learning through exploration and observation is the key. The paper marbling technique of Suminagashi creates beautiful prints that elegantly illustrate the microscopic interactions of solutions in a visually satisfying way. When combined with common household items like soap and alcohol, my students will be able to create intricate displays that will bring the material to life, and motivate them to learn more about the underlying science.
