The classroom rug we would like to purchase for our reading center reinforces the use of sign language and will make the area a much more inviting place to sit and read books. Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children rely on sign language and their ability to read and write to communicate with the world around them. This reading center will help students begin to learn that reading is fun! The rug could also be used for playtime, calendar time, and for our students with mobility issues. One student, in particular, is Deaf and has Cerebral Palsy. He is confined to a wheelchair much of the day. However, when he comes to the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Classroom he enjoys getting out of his wheelchair and doing activities on the floor. It would be nice for him to have a soft place to sit.
