Students love to write and draw on chalkboards, but many are gone from classrooms. Using a vertical chalkboard provides a tool for students to work on strengthening, visual skills, writing and coordination for a few. When you write on a vertical surface, most students will automatically use the correct pencil grasp. The chalkboard provides resistance to their fingers to help strengthen them for writing. Writing on a vertical surface also strengthens their arms and core as they have to hold their arms up to work. They also have a better ability to see visually what they are doing. It is right in front of their eyes and not at an angle or influenced by overhead lighting. When students are learning to write, it is easier for them to write larger. As their skills develop, they can write smaller and with greater precision. A large chalkboard allows for them to use their whole arm to write. You have to have good core and shoulder strength before you can develop refined precision. Today our students are being asked to begin writing in kindergarten and they are not physically prepared for the class demands.
