Lowriders in Space is a graphic novel that, while suggested up to grade 8, will be valuable for 9th graders. My goal will be to have the 9th graders create their own graphic novels incorporating their own cultures, language, and experiences into it. Using visuals is vital to literacy, and it will be through this project I will help these 9th graders develop visual literacy in tandem with other literacies so they can articulate their own experiences, be excited to read, and develop their writing skills as well. By lesson planning around this book, my goal will be for students to engage in a project that connects the materials to the greater world and allow them to tap into their creative personalities.
