Puppets are engaging toys that can help support oral language skills and communication, social/emotional development, and help children learn and understand the world around them through safe, imaginative play! One of the things we work on most in preschool is oral speaking skills, and encouraging children to put on puppet plays for others is an excellent way to get them motivated to communicate. Even just one audience member will make a world of difference in sparking the belief that what my students have to say is valuable and worth sharing. The use of the alphabet puppet set provides a variety of fun, engaging characters, and can be used along with our letter-of-the-week to support alphabetic awareness. Furthermore, puppets help support creativity and imagination. When children are able to play with puppets, a new world opens up where they can be anyone they want. By choosing community helper puppets, students will be encouraged to see themselves as doctors, teachers, and other professions, supporting the importance of an education and establishing the importance of college from a young age. In my classroom, the use of puppets will allow children to develop their social emotional skills, an essential part of a preschool education. When children are encouraged to take the role of others, they learn to empathize. This is very important in helping them experience compassion and respect for the feelings of other people. Puppets provide a sense of security that makes it easier for children to express thoughts and feelings that they might not otherwise feel comfortable sharing. With my student population, developing healthy coping mechanisms for feelings and working on interpersonal skills is vital to their social and academic future. Puppets are a healthy, engaging way to support the skills they will need to succeed in all areas of life.
