I need to attend a workshop to learn an effective, evidence based instructional approach for teaching students with dyslexia and other reading deficits. The Orton Gillingham systems are well-known, researched and have a record of successful instructional interactions with students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities. Receiving training in implementing their lesson approach will provide my students real experiences with a proven, multisensory approach and allow me to deliver it to any of my students. Besides intense, explicit instruction in how to administer the program's instructional approaches, materials are provided for implementing the drill and practice required for success. My students will receive systematic, explicit, rigorous instruction in conjunction with activities that promote literacy skill development. For many kids reading is a mystery and a struggle. I believe that I can become a provider of valuable instruction that can bridge gaps and help overcome barriers. I look forward to being able to use this multisensory approach with my students that have struggled with reading and writing. I look forward to seeing their progress and overcome the hurdles that have stood in their way. Reading is needed to achieve even the smallest goal. I look forward to using skills and strategies in my classroom to see those goals achieved. Advancements in technology and other fields demand participants who are confident readers and who are able to navigate whatever routes are placed before them. The need for literacy continues to increase. My project will make a difference by encouraging my students to believe in themselves as readers.
