Many social skills and social cognition programs for high school students provide materials on WHAT skills need to be used but don't provide the WHY and the HOW. The games and activities on this list provide opportunities for perspective-taking, modulating emotion, code-switching, learning about how behavior can impact how we are treated. Many students on the autism spectrum, and those with anxiety disorders, struggle with the nuances of high school social interactions. They need direct teaching AND practice to learn how to navigate the social world. These activities have been recommended by Ann Vagin, M.S. CCC-SLP in a number of her trainings in working with students on social cognition. They are fun and engaging and don't have complicated rules to follow, which allow me to target the social skill rather than the complexities of the game. I look forward to carrying over learned skills "in action" as well as watching my students progress and grow! I know that competent social interactions can make the difference between success and failure for these students.
