Usually, Mathematics is an individual skill we ask students to master to graduate on to the next class or the next grade. However, the future of these students is not individual, the future isn't solving problems alone. Their future is in collaboration, team work, and group problem solving. In my classroom, students will work with these whiteboards to collaborate on group projects, peer tutor, and build confidence. Students will work in groups to higher order thinking problems, where they have a space to work out problems, wipe and erase, and try again. Combining unlike terms, gaining new perspectives, and collaborating with peers is their future. After graduation, most do not have to solve problems individually, they always work in groups, pairs, etc. They will need to be able to combine all of the unlike ideas from peers and put them together to form one logical solution. This skill is rarely developed through Math. I hope to teach my students the value of team work in math, and how to use each different students´ strengths to turn them into strengths for the team. These whiteboards will allow us to do this.
