I hope to add a metallophone to my music classroom and Orff Instrumentarium. We currently have other Orff instruments such as xylophones and glockenspiels. The students are very excited about the prospect of exploring sound and creating music with metallophones as well. Metallphones have metal bars and produce a contrasting tone quality to the wooden bars of the xylophones. The Orff Schlwerk Method of music education focuses on engagement and hands-on music making, and the lessons have an element of play. Students will be encouraged to imitate, explore, improvise, and create music on the metallophone. During Orff lessons, the children rotate among a variety of instruments in the instrumentarium. The bars on the instruments are removable, and can be set to the pentatonic scale. This ensures that all sounds students create are harmonic, and pleasing to the ears. While playing Orff instruments, even very young children can be successful music makers!
