My K - 5 students working hard in school, learning English, and learning to read! I would love to see those literacy skills continue at home. Even a great teacher cannot do it all. It is so important for children to read at home to help them become great readers in order succeed throughout the rest of their educational journey to college. Most of my students' parents don't speak or read in English. Reading in one's native language promotes literacy skills, increases vocabulary, and background knowledge of students. Reading with their parents empowers the parents to participate in their children's education. It also shows children that their work at school is so important that their parents must also be involved. I have students who ask for books to read at home and extra work to do at home! I love that about these kids! I have students who will copy words from items in the pantry or the store and bring their "homework" back to me in the morning. They are so proud of every English word they can say, read and write! I want them to have more than just words to read at home. I want them to read sentences, see punctuation, read stories, learn about people, places, and things they have never seen. I want them to do this with the people they love the most. I want them to build strong bonds at home. I want to help their parents provide a strong education for their children. Reading is so important in a student's growth and language. I want to take my students' reading to a higher level by doing what every student in America should be doing every night: reading! Please help me!
