Students that struggle with emotional dysregulation and Sensory Processing Disorder can really benefit from taking sensory breaks. By creating a Sensory Room in our school, these students will have a space to utilize sensory tools and strategies to help them stay regulated throughout their day, allowing for a more positive, successful school experience. These rooms give students the opportunity to satiate their need for vestibular (movement) and proprioceptive (deep pressure/hard work) input. Students in general education can definitely benefit from this space as well. Although we have the room, and have used some creativity on a shoe string budget, we are short on funding to really make it into the great sensory space we hope it will be. (We already have enough balls for a ball pit, but need a container sturdy enough to hold them all, along with an active child. We would love some kinetic sand, a magic ball fidget (for breathing exercises), and a bean bag chair to use as calming strategies. We would also love to have a trampoline and swing to use for vestibular activities/movement outlets. We would also appreciate interlocking mat tiles to make sure our students are safe as they move around the room.) Thank you so much for your support!
