These materials will help my scholars deal with their emotions in the moment but also learn how to work through them instead of getting angry. Our curriculum is rigorous and that is an extra layer of frustration for some scholars who have rough lives at home. Just like adults, my scholars get frustrated at times and need a moment away from the group. My goal is that The Chill Out Corner will give them a safe space to calm down in their own way within a reasonable amount of time. When frustration arises, scholars are able to go to the calm down corner (at any time of the day), set the lava timer (included in item list). While in the calm down corner they have the change to review the book that shows them alternative ways to respond. Scholars will also have access to sensory items like play-doh, pin art, and stuffed animals to comfort them through rough moments. Once the timer is up, the scholar will return to the group feeling refreshed and confident that they just overcame a tough moment Having a welcoming area in the classroom has been proven to increase emotional stability and it gives the scholar the opportunity to work through trouble on their own.
