The students I teach deserve proper education, by having equity in opportunities, access, and materials. I teach 11th/12th Science to low-income minority students on the South side of Chicago; not much is just given to them in the world, and they are used to just going without. But should they have to? Most students struggle enough just getting to school and making sure they are properly in uniform and have something to eat, let alone having the proper school supplies. Most days, they do not even have pencils or paper to take notes or do the work, let alone anything more expensive or specialized. Supplies are limited, but particularly those that are "non-essential" materials, i.e lab materials, calculators, technology, etc. I would argue though that they ARE essential, given what I know it takes to be successful in the field of STEM. I teach my students that in order to be great, they must aspire to achieve greatness. I aim to eliminate barriers for them, and help them strive for their biggest dreams. Today, I ask for the small step of helping supply calculators to aspiring STEM leaders, in the hope that tomorrow, they will be the ones to revolutionize education for people like them, in communities like theirs.
