The tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas really affected our students on campus. many of our students personally knew students involved in the tragedy and we all felt the effects district wide. As a result the adults on campus became more aware of the importance of checking in with our students, not just academically, but the whole child. Mental health is important, especially for our students who have to manage so much in their home lives already. We want to give our students a place to go on campus where they feel safe and comfortable to experience all emotions. The Mindfulness Zen Room will give our students the opportunity to experience their emotions, free from judgment and with resources to help them through any of their struggles. This will become a safe zone with staff support on hand to help counsel students who just need a moment to recuperate. We could all use a moment to zen, and our students are no exception. This will decrease the number of undesirable behaviors demonstrated in the classroom as well as office referrals. Students will not perform well if they are not mentally healthy, and we would like to give them an opportunity to learn how to be.
