The purpose of a Sensory/Zen Den is to help students engage in their senses, and not have to worry about home, school, sports, etc. I think every school should have a Sensory/Zen Den. There is no right way to use sand or water beads. It invites participation; it stretches the imagination; it provides a potentially soothing sensory experience; and it is an excellent avenue for children to learn physical, cognitive, and social skills. Really, who doesn't want to play in sand? I think the other important factor is the lighting. You want the room to be inviting, yet calm. Sensory/Zen Dens are important because of the endless opportunities for sensory-based input, changes to alertness, and social interactions they can offer to a vast majority of students, regardless of the different needs of each person. I just want to say thank you for taking the time to read about my project!
