My students need to be exposed to things that will set them apart from others in the competitive college application process and the job market. By having their individual earbuds, they will be able to properly hear videos during research and/or learning. The meaning of something is altered when you do not have the ability to hear what is happening or taking place. If they are without individual earbuds and they have to turn their computers down enough to keep from distracting their neighbor, then they probably cannot hear what is going on anyhow. The purpose of the headphone is to concentrate a quiet and private sound in the ear of the listener. This increases the students' ability to focus. If one invention, the headphone, can change the world, then a personal set of earbuds could potentially alter the course one's life takes. On the brink of WWI, the headphone was created which opened a door for our military, never to be closed again. During science, the students like to watch videos on the topic at hand, time warps that show a slowed impact of two objects colliding, a cheetah chasing its prey, and first-hand accounts of sailors almost meeting death during a yacht race, to further their knowledge base and created new schema. They participate in computerized explorations to give them that hands-on experience they need to to better understand the world around them.
