The Junior National Young Leaders Conference is held to honor and inspire the most exceptional middle school students in the nation, distinguished by their academic excellence, leadership potential, and maturity, and to reinforce the virtues of leadership, citizenship, and democracy while using Washington, DC as their classroom. Students will return from JrNYLC with enhanced skills and abilities, not only understanding the key concepts of leadership, but applying them in their everyday lives. A transformation will take place, enabling scholars to understand that leaders must apply different traits based on different circumstances. They will know how to use their leadership skills of communication; practice critical thinking skills when analyzing information; recognize that leaders have a responsibility to make choices that have positive effects on the community; serve as both leaders and followers in group situations; relate leadership characteristics to social, cultural and historical contexts; and apply problem solving skills and techniques. These valuable skills will not only benefit the students during their academic studies but will also aid them when they eventually embark on their future careers. Since its foundation in 2003, JrNYLC has changed the lives of thousands of students. Based on a third-party study conducted by Beehive Research, 93% of JrNYLC alumni say the program made a positive contribution to their lives. The top skills that students gain are: stronger leadership skills, stronger teamwork abilities, improved communication skills, improved peer relationships, and a greater global awareness, to name a few. Additinoally, 95% of JrNYLC alumni say they were prepared for the challenges of college.
