My English language learners struggle with reading the complex vocabulary often included in the science curriculum. Many of them can't read in their own language as some come countries where they may not have received schooling before stepping in my classroom. I can make the task of understanding science less daunting by giving them tablets with programs that allow them to practice basic vocabulary, allow them to translate difficult words, and more innovative applications that model scientific concepts in an easy to understand way such as Pear Deck. These tablets will also be useful for my English speaking students who struggle with reading. I want the students that need the most support to still be able to access the vocabulary and concepts necessary to succeed in a demanding science curriculum. They will see that technology that is familiar to them can also help them learn.
