We are 38 second and third-grade students who currently study in the Mixed-age Dual Language Program. Some of us are English native speakers learning Spanish and Spanish native speakers learning English, all of us also are currently learning Mandarin! Before the devastating tornado that destroyed our beloved school Walnut Hill in the city of Dallas, we had a very good-looking school and classroom all conducive to our daily learning. After the tornado, our school and classroom were no more. In place, we found ourselves on a temporary site. That is why we are making our needs known to all of you asking your help to improve our physical environment to make it more suitable for our intellectual needs. Screen protectors for our windows will help us to reduce the radiation and heat coming directly from the concrete courtyard where our classroom is next to. It will also block the shine reflected in our whiteboard preventing us from seeing properly videos or slides our teacher project for our instruction. Our classroom is small. To economize space we ask for a wheeled stool and a tall desk. We love to see our intellectual work and projects hanging on the walls; for that, we need a glue gun strong enough to heat the silicone and have our work posted for a long period of time. We practice mindfulness and self-awareness every single day several times during the day. It does help our emotional self-regulation, but we also want to stay intellectually healthy as well! We want to build our intellectual powers through simple but challenging games like checkers, Chinese checkers, and memory card games to help the whole child in us.
