Play is a child’s work! Just as adults take their real world occupations seriously, so do children when it comes to the job they are best at; play. When children engage in pretend play, they are doing much more than just dressing up as a character or making their stuffed animals talk back and forth. They are acting out real world scenarios, imitating adults they interact with, building vocabulary, engaging in lengthy conversations, and learning to resolve conflicts on their own with other peers. My goal as a teacher is to provide opportunities for my students to engage in a variety of dramatic play roles that involve life-like props, new and exciting play themes that change throughout the year, and themes that are of interest to my students such as rocket ships, construction, and doctor. My staff and I are asking for pretend play materials that will enrich the play opportunities we already provide and help to keep the students excited and engaged in their play. Last year, my classroom was a last minute addition to the school and we have very few dramatic play supplies. With the growing number of kids in the district, the materials we do have is simply not enough. Furthermore, we only have "kitchen/home" type supplies. As you can imagine, this dramatic play theme only holds the attention of my preschoolers for so long before the center becomes uninteresting. Help us bring new and exciting toys into our program so our students can continue to do their best “work”!
