This year I am departmentalized, responsible for teaching all ELA standards. My students recently completed a unit integrating science into the ELA curriculum. They were highly engaged in the work...reading and working with fiction, non-fiction and poetry about animal adaptations. Then, they used their new vocabulary and information to write about what they learned. As a final project, students created magazine articles comparing animal adaptations in two biomes. Furthermore, they created podcasts highlighting key ideas from their research. Finding high quality, complex texts appropriate for third graders is an expensive challenge. The books that I have selected will provide my students with the information they need to not only meet our grade level standards about space, but will also help them learn more, do more and share their knowledge with others.
