In the book and companion workbook I am requesting, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens", author Sean Covey states that the seven habits expressed are, "the seven characteristics that happy and successful teens the world over have in common". After having one-on-one conferences with the students, most of my freshmen feel moody, even depressed at times, and overwhelmed with all the changes that come with advancing to high school. As their teacher, it is disheartening seeing so many young souls burdened with responsibilities that they aren't yet equipped to handle. This text and the companion workbook go together to create an interactive reading experience that helps students understand their position in the world and what they can do to better themselves. The book begins by having students understand the paradigm of themselves and others. I would love to have a project based on this by having students really consider how they view themselves and their surroundings by having them create graphic representations of how they see themselves, others, and the world around them. The book also goes into goal setting and following through with those goals. I want to begin the semester with students creating a vision board for the goals they want to accomplish in my class, in school, and in the real world. The book and workbook are filled with quotes that can be used to spark class discussions, images that are often humorous and the students can relate to and imagine certain situations better through, and, in general, contains meaningful advice for young teens trying to find answers to their big questions. I'm excited to work with this material, and see some weight be lifted from these young adult shoulders as they try to find their place in this crazy world. Thank you!
