The focus is literacy knowledge and skills development in an age appropriate way. We have 2 small group (6-8 children) read alouds daily. These focus on attention to print, vocabulary and comprehension. Read alouds with reference to print include verbal and non-verbal strategies for drawing children's attention to print with bold text, counting words, and pointing out the pictures in the books. It also includes talking about the front and back covers, authors and different parts of the book. Read alouds with a comprehension and vocabulary focus include discussion before, during and after the reading. Age appropriate explanations of the words within the text, and using the vocabulary words in different parts of the day. Also during the day we have several opportunities for the children to access the Book Area and all the books available to either read on their own or ask a teacher to read to them.
