"Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all." - Aristotle Suicide attempts are increasing among elementary aged students. This is what we learned in our first teacher training of the school year. Our children are crying out for help. As a writing teacher, my job is to teach them to write well, but first and foremost I have a classroom of souls who are aching for someone to pay attention to their feelings more than their grammar usage. I want to teach my students how to write in a way that is not only effective and will grab the reader's attention, but that will simultaneously help them learn to express their many complex emotions. Writing is a tool for healing, and my students have a lot to heal. Patricia Polacco's books are affectionately known as tear-jerkers. Her writing is powerfully beautiful because she writes about connection and self-worth through heart-warming stories. I want my students to study how Polacco tells a story, so they can learn how to tell theirs. Help me heal their hearts through the power of writing.
