I can remember the day I fell for the author, Zora Neale Hurston. I was wrapped tightly around the romantic yet tragic events of one of her greatest novels, Their Eyes Were Watching God. This book was given to by my high school language arts teacher. She sparked a deeper love in me for the written word. After a decade of teaching elementary school, I can attest to the fact that there is nothing more rewarding than sparking a young mind's imagination. Students deserve to be inspired to be great, and one of the greatest ways to inspire is to allow them to read and be exposed to a vast variety of informational and fictional text. My students often have 25-40 minutes a day of DEAR time (Drop Everything And Read). This is a time that they go into their comfortable space (on a pillow, at their desk, small group table, or on the carpet) and read independently daily. They then use their book logs to log their book, and complete a digital book report weekly on a chapter book of their choice. They truly enjoy this time, but they have read through many of the chapter books that I have available. They truly enjoy reading aloud to one another, sharing with their elbow buddy and giving reviews on the books they've read. They take such good care of our books and always look forward to new titles. I would more than appreciate any donation that could be made towards this project. Reading opens the door to so many possibilities in life. Will you help me open the door for my young readers? Thanks in advance for your support!
