My school is one-to-one with student Chromebooks, but I believe that they have begun to do more harm than good. When the Chromebooks come out for an assignment, students are too tempted to start playing on YouTube or otherwise goofing off on the Internet. I also believe that typing their answers is not allowing students to take true ownership of their education. I would like to provide my students a mostly off-the-grid environment, where their work is all in one place with no distractions. These supplies will be used to create interactive notebooks, where all the students assignments from daily warm-ups to notes to worksheets and beyond will be in the notebook. I could require students to purchase the notebooks themselves, but with my courses being nine weeks each, waiting for students to bring a notebook from home can really slow us down. Students are more likely to lose assignments until they have their notebook. There are also a large proportion of them that will struggle to get a notebook due to economic concerns. Of course, I will still use our Chromebooks occasionally for enrichment and reinforcement, but by limiting my students access to them, I believe that my classroom will function better and give my students a better chance at success.
